Protect Milton's King Lake from unnecessary draining that will decimate local ecosystem.

The Issue

We are a community of residents who have homes near and around King Lake in Milton. The Georgia Soil & Water Conservation Commission has remained determined to completely drain this city's 35 acre lake for TWO YEARS so they may receive $8 Million in Federal dam money to demolish a "working dam" and rebuild an excessive and expensive replacement to the current dam, which is already working as it should through the heavy downfalls of 2019-2021 and beyond. This project will not only decimate the thriving ecosystem of a variety of fish, frogs and turtles, but also the beautiful Blue Heron nesting grounds and families of mallards. In addition, King Lake’s community’s recreation area for boating, kayaking, and fishing will disappear over night, and so will our home values. By Government estimates, it can take up to 11 YEARS to fill the lake back up to current standards. This will be the largest construction project ever in Milton and include the operation of a major industrial facility within the city, with enough concrete to build the first 37 floors of the Empire State Building and at least 5800 25-ton trucks traversing our city non-stop. Our roads will be torn up, congested and dangerous for years. This is long term quality of life issue that needs to be addressed! Government officials have not adequately informed the community's most directly involved about this massive construction project and have not been fair and forthcoming of their plans, and absolutely refuse to even discuss a compromise with the community that will be severely impacted by these actions for more than a decade. We ask you to support your Milton neighbors by signing this petition to ask the commission to work with the Milton communities and homeowners gravely affected by this dam proposal and to do so in Good Faith and FULLY ADDRESS our legitimate concerns for the ecosystem, quality of life issues and a decades long depression on King Lake home values. Thank you for your time and your thoughtful consideration. We are grateful for your support!
