Education is the cornerstone of childhood development and it is every child’s right. In 2015, the government of Liberia committed to the Sustainable Development Goal on Education (SDG 4) which promises all children will complete free primary and secondary education by 2030.
90% of a child’s brain develops before the age of five so to reach their full potential, they need quality care in their early years. As they grow and develop, school continues to give children a safe place to play and learn, as well as giving them the skills they need to succeed in life. Providing quality education to all children and young people is also essential for economic growth, development and sustainability.
Thus, investment in education, especially pre-primary education is crucial. Yet, the consensus among ordinary Liberians and stakeholders is that our education system is in dire need of improvement. The latest data on Liberia shows that in 2016, the Liberian government spent 3.27% of our GDP on education, this is a positive increase however, it is not enough and we must demand more!
We must demand that the new government contribute more to education and to ensure equitable access and learning.
They must significantly increase spending on quality early childhood education if we want better future.
How? It might seem like a tough call but in reality, it’s extremely simple. We must demand that President George Weah realize his pledge of supporting education starting from the early years. It is only this investment that will lead to a strong, peaceful and prosperous future for Liberia.
So sign the petition today and demand that our new President invest in our education system, our children and our young people!
Besides, we aren’t in this alone. Young people around the world are demanding the same action from their leaders, supported by ‘A World At School Global Youth Ambassadors’, an international network of young passionate individuals advocating for quality education.
