Molly Scott MEP has launched a Written Declaration to the European Parliament that will cement the categorisation of sanitary products as ‘essential products’ within European law for good. This will allow all EU countries to end tampon tax in their home country, if their national Parliament agrees. It would be AMAZING to get as many MEPs on board with this as possible. This declaration aims to tackle taxation policies that have a gender dimension and subsequently disproportionately disadvantage women. It promotes The Council’s conclusions made in March 2016 which called for a zero rate option for sanitary products including tampons and hopes to encourage Member States to make use of the flexibility in the existing VAT Directive by applying the lowest possible VAT rate to women’s sanitary products.
