George Mason University: Comply with VA Law, Make Donor Agreements Public!
Why this petition matters
Dear George Mason University and the GMU Foundation,
We the undersigned support Transparent GMU's lawsuit requesting that you comply with Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act and make your agreements with private donors available to the public. The law does not allow a public university, like George Mason, to conceal its records by simply outsourcing its public business to a private company (in this case, the GMU Foundation).
Because GMU’s largest donor, the Charles Koch Foundation, has entered into grant agreements with other universities in exchange for influence over hiring, research and curricular decisions, we believe transparency of George Mason's relations with private donors is of the utmost importance. University constituents deserve to know if their educational institution is being manipulated by private donors.
As citizens concerned for the integrity and future of public education, we call on you to comply with the law and make your grant and gift agreements with private donors transparent!
Update: Since filing the lawsuit and launching this petition, we have been receiving incredible media coverage! Here is a great article by the Student Press Law Center where students are quoted about their concerns. We were even been covered by the Washington Post and 20+ other outlets! Keep sharing this petition to support us!
