It has been over two years since decapods crustaceans like crabs, lobsters and prawns were legally recognised as being sentient animals – that is being able to feel pain, joy and suffering.
Yet they have still are being subjected to many harmful, painful and inhumane treatment as they have little to no protection under UK legislation. They are still being boiled alive, sent alive in the post to be killed in private homes and torn apart by the fishing industry who sell their claws or tails as food.
We don't think this is right and with a General Election happening in the UK, we are calling on the future government to prioritise decapod welfare so that these cruel practices can be banned for good. This is an opportunity for all of us to make a difference for millions of vulnerable animals.
What we are asking for is really quite simple: decapod crustaceans are recognised by law as sentient animals, they deserve equal protection as other animals under animal welfare laws.
