Proposals to curtail litter from fast food outlets
The Issue
For many years our towns, cities and countryside has been blighted by fast food litter. During the Covid 19 lockdown, because these food outlets closed, many voluntary groups made headway in clearing up this rubbish. Immediately after the lockdown was lifted the littering started and in some cases forests burned. There is a real concern that this waste could be infected and contribute to the current health issues.
This petition is to establish ways in which Fast Food outlets can be targeted in such a way that reduces the costs, both environmental and monetary, of cleaning up and preventing further littering. Proposals are not limited to but could include:-
The halting of takeaway food by substituting with “eat in” or “delivery” services.
The use of bring your own containers or the purchase of expensive returnable/reusable containers with deposit returns.
The re-introduction of bottle deposit schemes improved to also include drink cans.
The use of mandatory videos and poster campaigns targeted at educating consumers of the enormous costs associated with discarding rubbish.
Recruitment of all benefit receivers to volunteer for Council run litter collection services.
A program of Council tax rebates for litter picking volunteers.
Education programs for all school pupils regarding the impact of discarding litter especially plastics.
Funding for these activities should be targeted at large corporations as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programs.
