Bring back the glass milk bottle - Buy bottled milk, not in plastic containers or cartons

Milk is one of the major contributors to the problem of plastic waste in the UK today, just think about how many containers you personally have thrown away in the past year alone!

We can quickly reduce the amount of plastic in the world by simply buying milk in glass bottles instead and improve our health at the same time.

Bring back the iconic glass milk bottle! Not for nostalgia but for an investment in the future of your children and the world we live in today.

The UK discards millions of plastic milk containers each year, plastic that we currently can't even recycle since China ceased taking our plastic recycling off our hands.

Continuing to use plastic containers for milk, whether it is dairy milk or not, is environmentally irresponsible, when there is a trusted and proven packaging alternative for better health, taste and the environment.

Help force the major supermarkets to change the supply chain and use glass for bottling milk,  or even change and buy from a local dairy that cares and already bottles their milk in glass.

The idea of using plastic was to make our lives easier, buying milk was made to be supposedly more convenient and less expensive. What we didn’t realize is that all of that would come at a cost. We no longer have the safety in knowing where our milk comes from and how it is processed. We give it to our children and drink it ourselves without much thought.

We used to be so much better at recycling as we nearly all used to ‘leave out our empties’ each day for the milkman to collect. I bet you can still hear the faint chink of the bottles as they were put at your door. This represented many people’s first understanding of the concept of recycling and we didn’t realise at the time how right we had it and how much good we were doing for our planet.

Why not also help the local dairy farmer in the process and only buy British and maybe the big supermarkets will take note.

Let’s know what we’re drinking and where it comes from, let’s reduce the amount of time it’s in transit and get ourselves a fresher, tastier milk in the process.

Milk also has a more natural taste when it is stored in glass bottles.

Why glass?

Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity. 80% of the glass that is recovered is made into new glass products.

There's also a good reason wine and spirits are stored in glass: purity of taste.

Milk supplied in plastic or plastic coated cardboard is chemically contaminated by a fertility-depressing, cancer-causing, endocrine system disrupting chemicals, bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates. These chemicals leach into our milk and we consume them without realising. Since nearly every plastic bottle on the planet is now made of BPA-based polycarbonates we are all chronically exposed.

Glass is nonporous and impermeable, so there are no interactions between glass packaging and products to affect the flavour of the milk. No nasty aftertaste! When consumers choose milk that is packaged in glass, we avoid potential risks while enjoying a number of benefits.

BENEFITS OF THIS CHANGE ARE IMMENSE:

Reduced plastic waste
Better quality dairy milk
More business for local farmers
Reduced NHS costs as less chemicals enter the food chain to cause illnesses
Reduced transportation and therefore environmental impact and pollution
Reduced cost to councils in having to sort plastic waste collections

Please support this cause for change, for our planet, our welfare, our health and the future we will leave our children.
