Warner Brothers to release alternate cut of Suicide Squad.
The Issue
It has been revealed that the David Ayer directed film Suicide Squad was heavily tampered with by the film studio Warner Brothers. This is perceived as a reaction due to negative criticism of the dark tone of the film Batman V Superman. These changes, include the decision to remove the majority of Jared Leto's highly anticipated scenes as the Joker. Removing his scenes not only disappointed fans, but changed the story in several ways. These changes altered the original tone and story of the film is several ways.
It is thought that the abusive aspects of Harley Quinn and Jokers relationship were removed. To support this, a documented scene involving a motorcycle chase, Harley with a gun to Jokers head, and Joker slapping Harley, was never included in the film. The narrative was changed to where Joker is pushing Harley from a helicopter to save her rather than to kill her as was originally in the film. This directly affected the removing of a scene documented in the trailers where the Joker returns near the climax to confront the team and reclaim Harley. This is not only more interesting, but more accurate to the characters. Themes of violence against women could have been explored, as some people look to Harley as an inspiration in overcoming abuse. Other examples of lost Jared Leto scenes from the trailers include the line "I can't wait to show you my toys". Reports say a later scene shows Joker using a Butcher Knife on a Belle Reve security guard for getting too close to Harley.
It is also said that many scenes depicting the other member of the team as more villainous, less redeemable characters were removed. Examples include references to Killer Croc as a cannibal, but also an artist in his own right making sculptures from bones. Also much of Katana and Captain Boomerangs back stories are said to be removed. Much of the edge and inner-conflict within the movie, such as Harley Quinn hating but growing to like Boomerang was lost due to this choice. Other rumoured scenes according to those who saw test screenings included a flashback to the Joker and Batman's hinted battle at Wayne Manor and the death of Robin. This could have been the most pleasing moment ever on film for DC fans. The Suicide Squad theatrical cut was altered from something potentially amazing to suit a generic blockbuster formula.
Changes such as the addition of an out of place rock and roll soundtrack and colorful info graphics should also be replaced with the original score and more modest graphics. This would not be an extended cut, but a fundamentally different movie. Be it resolved that Warner Brother, David Ayer, Geoff Johns and others with decision making power at DC comics, agree to release the movie as the fans so desire. This should be done even if it involves ret-conning the theatrical cut. The resulting film could run in theatres as an R-rated cut, or be home release only.
The largest problem is that the desired version of this film is so different from the current theatrical release. Warner Brother may not feel they are not able to release a completely different movie. This is a complicated problem with an easy solution, that can truly satisfy fans and provide a film consistent with the quality we have grown to expect from DC since Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder's films. As DC fans we recognize and sympathize with the problem of pleasing critics, hardcore fans and casual movie goers alike.
