General Service Medal Clasp for Belize service (1972 - 1994)

The Issue
- Service of HM Forces in Belize over the period 1972 - 1994 has been overlooked for an award of a medal (clasp to General Service Medal 1962 [GSM]). Not only during this period were hostile intentions of Guatemala rebuffed through offensive action and constant patrolling and monitoring, but the conditions in the secondary jungle were harsh, unpleasant and dangerous. Additional hardships including disease and heatstroke were common. Throughout HM Forces helped stabize the region and train a credible Belizean Defence Force to deter external aggression. Humanitarian aid was also delivered as a constant throughout HM Forces' deployment in the theatre. Medals were authorised in Cyprus during the First Gulf War and the Falklands after the conflict ended. Both these environments were less hostile than Belize. It is now time to recognize the service of all those who participated in this operational theatre with the award of a BELIZE clasp to the GSM.
