Leave The Wildlife Living On The Gateway Campus Alone

The Issue

I am an employee of Genentech on the Gateway Campus in South San Francisco, CA.  We had a darling little black squirrel affectionately nicknamed Simone.  Simone would eat out of your hand, come when called and was just entertaining to watch.  A Director at Genentech complained to the Property Manager, Boston Properties, because he felt she was overly aggressive, which she was not.  Even though we explained that moving her would be against California Law it was done anyway.  According to the California Dept of Fish & Game, Section 465, (G) (1), the law states that animals trapped must be released on site or killed.

We were told that she was being “relocated” but based upon the law she was more than likely murdered, for no other reason other than she was friendly.  It’s rare when any wildlife is trusting of humans and Simone’s trust of people led to her untimely death.  It is too late for Simone but I am asking that Boston Properties and Genentech leave any wildlife located on the Gateway Campus alone.  Humans do not own this planet, we must share it with all living creatures.  Lack of compassion such as this is the reason that so many animals are endangered or are already extinct.
