We are advocating for gender equity in the sport of ultimate.
As of yesterday, September 8th, at 5:00 pm Eastern Time, we, as members of some of the top Men's, Women's and Mixed Ultimate Club teams, shared a statement of beliefs and request for discussion with USA Ultimate. We sent this document to USAU with faith that they have the best interests of our sport in mind, and that they will be willing to listen to an adamant request for re-evaluation of how gender equity is expressed in our sport's policies and contracts.
The impetus for the timing of this statement is that we understand USAU to be in contract negotiations with potential broadcast partners for 2017 and beyond, and we wish to see these beliefs expressed in any future broadcast contracts.
To develop this statement in a short timeline we have kept the discussion to a fairly closed group. Now, we are sharing this statement publicly so that the rest of the community has the opportunity to voice their opinions on these matters.
This statement and our public actions are in no way meant to disrespect the work of USAU, its staff, or volunteers. We thank them for their hard work, and we seek to engage in a conversation on how future policy changes and contract discussions can best lead the way on gender equity in sport.
We invite you to show your support of our statement of beliefs, and of the spirit of amending gender inequity in the sport of Ultimate, by signing our petition! Please join us in continuing the conversation as fellow players (or community members) advocating for gender equity!
