Students in the Vancouver School District who identify themselves as transgender or under the transgender umbrella feel that they have been underserved. The options provided have been to use multi-stall “girls” or “boys” bathrooms, in which many students have been victims of harassment, or to have a staff member unlock a faculty bathroom or use the one in the nurse’s office. Especially for transgender or gender non-conforming students who have medical issues, this is not an adequate accommodation. Gender neutral single stall bathrooms should be available in every school in accessible locations. I’m starting this petition in the hopes of making changes in all schools in VSD, so that students can feel safe and comfortable in school.
