Funimation boycott until Jamie Marchi is fired for threats of violence and bad scripts!

The issue

I call for a boycott of all Funimation services and products until the writer and voice actress Jamie Marchi is removed from the company and a public apology from Funimation is issued for their employee's disturbing behaviour. Marchi is a talented voice artist who's voice I have been enjoying in my media for years. However, over the years, it has been shown that she is unable to work professionally, staining Funimation's image and ruining the media we love.

Recently, it has become apparent that Marchi is a violent individual. On the 7th of Feburary, in response to the Vic Mignogna situation, she tweeted the following:

"Yes, I want his head. I want his balls. I want him to feel an ounce of the pain he's cause others and then fucking choke on it. I want you to take his dick out of your ears so you can actually hear reality. But, you know, that's just me."

Regardless of whether Vic is innocent or not, this is a truly disgusting thing for a high-profile employee to publicly tweet.

  • Firstly: Marchi uses threats of extreme violence, while Funimation claims to not support any types of harassment or threatening behaviour directed at anyone but indirectly supports this type of behaviour by having no punishment enforced when their employee's spread hateful remarks targeted at their loyal consumers and other individuals.
  • Secondly: She used inappropriate language in a downright appalling manner. Twitter's TOS specify that children from the ages of 13 and older are able to create an account. This tweet was released publicly, potentially exposing it to those age groups. Further, Funimation has specified themselves that their target demographic is young people, below the age of 25, increasing the chances that young teens follow both Funimation and their high-profile employees. Due to Funimation still working with Marchi, it isn't a stretch to say that the company supports the exposure of such incredibly foul language to young impressionable minds.
  • Thirdly: Community goodwill is vital for the longevity of a company like Funimation, and right now it's at an all time low because of Marchi. Anime, while no where near as niche as it once was, is still not heavily accepted in the West's mainstream. We are companies like Funimation's lifeblood. We, as a community, have far more power then they'd would like us to believe. We all have the power to make the industry we love better.

Marchi's incredibly inappropriate behaviour is just the icing, however, for she has affected the very media we consume. She has edited multiple translations of shows she has written on to fit her political beliefs. As the customer, we should expect better from Funimation and their script writers! How can we trust that we, as paying customers, aren't getting an inferior product in terms of script just because we watch a dub, which is the entire point of the company? We need to show that the anime community won't stand for this. We need to show that we believe in respecting the original integrity of the work, and that altering a translation to fit one's own ideologies is never okay!

I for one know I will no longer be using the Funimation's services and consuming their products until they part ways with Jamie Marchi and issue a public apology for how she behaved. The behaviour she displayed was unacceptable on both a professional and personal level. The fact that her misuse of power as a writer didn't initiate a response from Funimation and got her fired, or at least expelled from this particular position, speaks volumes on Funimation's management and their lack of care for the shows they work on.

Whether you are solely a sub watcher, whether you love dubs, this is an important issue! If this type of behaviour, tampering and lack of action from companies continues, and becomes accepted, the entire community will be affected. Funimation has been known to target fansubs with cease and desist letters, if they continue to provide us with disingenuous translations, and take down subs from fans that do respect the original source material's script, where will we get accurate translations? How can we trust subs that are released from companies like Funimation if the person who ruins the script is still employed? Scripts that are flat out wrong cannot be allowed any longer. We need to stand up as a whole community and say NO to clearly wrong translations and NO to utterly inappropriate and repulsive public behaviour from employees that represents the company! I'm calling for an entire boycott of all of their services! Funimation has shown they have ZERO respect for us, their customers, by providing us with intentionally diminished products. This is not a company we should support. Period. Change needs to happen.

To Funimation: I have been watching your dubs since I could remember, starting with Dragon Ball Z. Not too long ago, I would've called myself a genuine fan of your company and the dubs you released. But due to the actions, or lack thereof, from the company's upper management in response to Jamie Marchi's threats of extreme violence and her known purposeful defilement of scripts has pushed me, and many others, over the edge. I can no longer, in good faith, support your company until you prove to us that you respect us as customers.
