GCPS School Safety

The Issue

We, the undersigned, are calling for immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of our children, educators, and staff within the Gwinnett County School System. The recent tragedy in our neighboring community, where innocent lives were taken by a student, has shaken us all to our core. It has highlighted the urgent need for stronger security measures that can be implemented right away.

While we appreciate the efforts made by schools in conducting lockdown drills and maintaining locked entry points, these measures are not enough to protect against threats from within.

As parents, it's become deeply unsettling to send our children to school each day, worried about whether they will return home safely. The growing number of dangerous incidents has only amplified our anxiety. School should be a safe place and not a source of worry.

We propose the following action to be taken immediately:

Installation of Metal Detectors at All School Entrances
By installing metal detectors at every school entrance, we can significantly reduce the risk of dangerous weapons being brought onto school grounds. This measure has been successfully implemented in schools across the country and can be installed swiftly in our district. If another tragedy is prevented, the cost is worth every penny.

Additional Considerations for Safety Measures:

Dedicated Security Officer for Every School
Currently, our schools rely on shared security officers across multiple locations, which is insufficient in emergency situations. Each school should have its own dedicated, on-site security officer to respond quickly to threats and maintain ongoing safety.

Increased Focus on Mental Health Interventions
Many incidents of school violence are preventable when early signs are properly addressed. The individual responsible for this recent tragedy was known to have issues, yet intervention was lacking. We urge the district to establish regular, mandatory mental health check-ins for at-risk students to ensure early identification and consistent support. Only when a student is no longer considered a threat should they be released from care.

Our children, teachers, and staff deserve to feel safe at school. The time for action is now. Let’s not wait for another tragedy to take place. Together, we can make our schools a better place by installing metal detectors and considering future security and mental health measures.
