The Issue

Growing up, I found it really upsetting that black history was never really taught in school, only lightly touched upon.  I remember every October, when BHM would roll around and the first day of that month, in assembly, it would be briefly mentioned, nothing more.

The only black person we'd learn about would be Mary Seacole, and it wouldn't even be a full lesson and it was the same every year. With Black History Month starting tomorrow, I'm starting this petition as a hope that ALL schools in the UK have Black History placed on the curriculum, so not only black people, but non poc can learn about it as Black History is British History and there are so many black people who have made so many achievements and contributions to our society. Black History is just as valid and important.

Too much of black history has been painted over, been made to take a backseat. Black people are not less, we are strong, empowered, brothers, sisters, cousins, friends, we stand together in unity. Everyone should be educated on Black History regardless.

Sharnai GaylePetition StarterHi, I'm Sharnai! I like to consider myself an egalitarian as I'm a strong believer of equal rights for all. As a young black woman, I've been subject to discrimination, (ethnicity and being autistic), so I've come here to put my word out there.
