Urge Governor Newsom to end the puppy mill to pet store pipeline
  California lawmakers have sent Bella’s Act (AB 2152) to Governor Newsom for his signature. This important legislation will stop the sale of puppy mill puppies in California pet stores once and for all by strengthening the current pet store law. 
 
Bella’s Act closes a loophole in the current pet store law by no longer allowing stores to sell puppies, kittens or bunnies, regardless of where they are sourced from. Stores can still host adoption events with legitimate shelters and rescues, but they can no longer profit from the sale of puppies mill puppies that they claim are “rescues.” In order to appear to adhere to the current law that only allows stores to source puppies from shelters and rescues, a dozen stores set up sham rescues and funneled puppy mill puppies through them. This bill ensures this cruel and deceptive practice stops.
 
Bella’s Act is named after a corgi who was bred in a puppy mill and sold in a San Diego pet store for thousands of dollars in “adoption fees.” Shortly after arriving home, Bella became severely ill and prolonged treatment left her traumatized, causing her family significant heartache and expensive veterinary care to nurse her back to health. This bill ensures no more families or dogs have to suffer this same fate.
