"RIGHT TO REPAIR" THE PRODUCTS YOU OWN.

The Issue

There are 3 things this petition targets.
The first reason, is our RIGHT to be able to obtain replacement parts and/or services for any product(s) we purchase. There is no good argument for us to permit the perpetuation of the same DISPOSABLE ECONOMY that keeps us at the financial mercy of companies who intentionally manufacture products with PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE built into them.
It is a fact going back to 1950's that companies spent large sums of money (and still do) to determine how to make devices fail past their warranty expiration, but leave enough confidence in the product that we would go out and buy it again.
Without doubt, this is certainly responsible for the capitalistic success the United States saw throughout the latter half of the 20th Century. However, that DISPOSABLE ECONOMY is what has led us to much of the out-of-control pollution and mountainous landfills that contribute to the degradation of the very ecosystem that supports us!

That leads me to the SECOND REASON TO SUPPORT THIS PETITION!
Climate Change, Global Warning, Ocean Acidification and the myriad of other threats we face are not just buzz-words. They are "THREATS TO OUR SECURITY".

I put emphasis on "THREATS TO OUR SECURITY" because in very similar phrasing, companies like Apple and Microsoft have tried to argue that allowing US to fix and maintain operational products we've purchased, poses a "...security risk to users" [ Chaim Gartenberg], and that they have "...considerable financial and political capital that will be used to lobby against any new legislation".

Well, since those companies possess such a considerable force, we need to arm our representatives with the FULL FORCE OF THE AMERICAN CONSUMER!

Third reason - Most everyone understands by now that big corporations do not account for the majority of jobs in this country, Small businesses do. The passing of this type of legislation will strengthen and expand the secondary market for parts and service.

There are currently about 20 other states working on similar legislation, and since California is such a powerhouse economy on its own, a win for California will lead in precedence for more consumer friendly legislation Nationwide.

Thank you for signing!
