We’d like to safely open adult slow-pitch softball in California and are asking for your support. Many states have been playing slow-pitch softball during the pandemic with a very low rate transmission of COVID-19. We feel the games could be played safely and smartly, with plenty of social distancing and other precautions to ensure player safety. Precautions could include mandatory mask-wearing and social distancing in dugouts by all players, as well as catchers and umpires being masked-up during gameplay. Players would not be allowed to share bats or water jugs. Other common-sense protective safety measures could be added and/or adjusted as we go.

We all love softball, and we think many people could use weekend softball tournaments as a way to get out of the house, relieve stress and get some exercise. We believe the benefits are plentiful and outweigh the risk as long as it’s done smartly. Recently, the Philadelphia Phillies played a three game series against the Florida Marlins. The Marlins unknowingly had 18 players infected with COVID-19, yet no Phillies player contracted the virus from the gameplay interactions.

While we realize COVID-19 is very real and deserves our full attention, we believe that with certain mandatory precautions in place, slow-pitch softball can be played safely without spreading the virus. We’d greatly appreciate your support. Thank you!
