Governor Newsom & CA State Legislators: Eliminate OUSD's Outstanding Debt to Prevent School Closures

OUSD has rushed the decision to close seven OUSD schools serving primarily Black and Brown families in low-income communities with no regard for how this will impact students, families, staff, and the neighborhoods that depend on the resources these schools provide. School closures disrupt and dismantle communities. OUSD's budget problems have not been fixed by school closures in the past and this will only lead to the further spread of charter schools - creating more budget issues in the future due to declining enrollment.  

Parker Elementary and Community Day School will being shutting down at the end of this school year. 

Five more schools will close at the end of the next school year in 2023: Brookfield Elementary, Carl B. Munck Elementary, Grass Valley Elementary, Fred T. Korematsu Discovery Academy and Horace Mann Elementary.

In addition, the measure approved merges RISE Elementary into New Highland Academy Elementary for the start of the 2022-23 school year. Beginning that same school year, La Escuelita Elementary and Hillcrest Elementary will eliminate grades 6-8.

These school cuts and closures are affecting thousands of students. We have made this petition to inform everyone about what is going on and what people are going through.
