Ashley Vasquez started this petition to Governor Gavin Newsom

Andrey Bernik is currently serving a life sentence in California Medical Facility.  He is petitioning Governor Gavin Newsom to commute his sentence and allow him to go in front of the parole board for consideration of an early release.

Andrey is a 43-year-old son and father to two beautiful daughters.  He is a first-time offender who was convicted of Second-Degree Murder in 2011 based on a tragic incident that tore apart his family.  The incident took place in 2006 when a threat had been made against his father.  In hopes of resolving matters, Andrey and a few family members agreed to meet with the other party.  The family was attacked.  Andrey witnessed his father being pursued by a man with a knife.  Fearing for his father’s life, Andrey fired a single shot into the air as a deterrent.  The shot resulted in the death of his close friend and brother-in-law, Yuri.

Prior to the incident, Andrey suffered from anxiety and panic attacks.  During his incarceration, he has successfully completed numerous mental health programs which have taught him how to identify and manage his anxiety which previously led to irrational thought processes.

Having learned to manage his anxiety, Andrey has committed to being a mentor to younger prisoners and has himself been a model prisoner.  He is trusted among the staff and has received much praise for his strong work ethic, respectfulness, and eagerness to grow as an individual.

Andrey has spent much of his time incarcerated working on the facilities as well as volunteering in the innovative Paws for Life program which saves dogs from the predetermined fate of high kill rate shelters.  Andrey has learned through Paws for Life to train these rescued dogs and allow them to go to forever homes.  Jon Grobman, the Director of Paws for Life K9 Rescue, has described Andrey as a “humble, remorseful individual, who continues to demonstrate an abiding need to make amends for past mistakes.  This enduring commitment has extended back to our neighborhoods as Mr. Bernik actively participates in the Paws For Life K9 Rescue program."

Andrey has a loving and thoughtful demeanor.  He has shown immense remorse for his actions and has had no other incidents of violence or otherwise.  Andrey has the support of his family and job opportunities lined up for him upon his release, making him the perfect candidate for commutation.

Please sign and share this petition to help reunite Andrey with his family.
