Hi everyone, I’m sorry I haven’t been in touch for a little while. We’ve been busy working away on this issue. Here are some updates for you: A few weeks ago I met with Baroness Olly Grender of the Lib Dems to discuss this issue before she debated it in the House of Lords as part of her Renters’ Rights Bill. Then I appeared on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire show to talk about the importance of banning letting agency fees. Last Friday Baroness Grender took to the floor in the House of Lords to talk about banging letting fees among other key issues when it comes to making renting fairer for everyone. This is called the committee stage; her Renters’ Rights Bill is now in what’s called the report stage. It will now be further discussed before any action is taken. I spoke with Baroness Grender and asked her how she hopes her Renter’s Rights Bill will progress now. She said: ‘My Bill has got through to the next stage, so we’re one step closer to getting tenant fees banned. There’s still a long way to go, but we made a strong case that something must be done to reduce the astronomical upfront costs of renting. The Government are finally listening. Public pressure has pushed this up the political agenda, more pressure will make it a reality.’ Everyone who has signed this petition has lead their weight to this important issue and those who have the power to make change are listening. I would be so grateful if you would write to or email your local MP and ask them to sign this Early Day Motion which also recommends the banning of letting fees. This is a way that you can help to keep the pressure on and make your voice heard. If you are unsure how to contact your MP go to theyworkforyou.com and enter your postcode. Thanks! Please keep sharing the petition! Vicky & The Debrief
