I am absolutely thrilled to be able to say that we have won this campaign!
As part of today's Autumn Statement the Government are announcing ban on letting agency fees. We're still waiting for full details on how this will be implemented but this is undoubtedly a victory!
Thank you to everyone who has signed and shared this petition, your support has made change happen. We have influenced government policy and changed the law.
Huge thanks also go to Baroness Olly Grender for her brilliant work in Westminster on renters’ rights, Lib Dem MP Tom Brake, everyone at The Debrief and Shelter.
This change will have a positive impact on the lives of millions of people who rent in England. We can take it as a positive sign that this country’s housing crisis is no longer being ignored.
I spoke with Olly this morning and she said:
'Our relentless campaigning to get tenants’ letting fees banned has finally paid off and the Government has recognised this is the right thing to do. The upfront costs of renting are far too high, pushing many people into debt just to pay the fees, and stopping others from being able to move into a rented home.'
'It’s no coincidence that just five days after the debate on our Renters’ Rights Bill, which urged the Government to ban these fees, they have agreed to make this important change. Now they must agree to our calls to make renting safer and more secure too.'
There's still work to be done to make renting fair once and for all - we need longer and more secure tenancies, we need affordable rents and we need the Government to build more houses than they are currently.
Please keep the pressure on, write to your MP and tell them to back Baroness Grender's Renters’ Rights bill.'
You have the power to make change happen.
Thanks,
Vicky & The Debrief
