Save Woodside Ferry

The Issue

We understand that Merseytravel are planning to close Woodside Ferry terminal as part of a cost-cutting exercise. This news comes as a real shock to residents and visitors who have enjoyed using this service and have very fond memories of their experience.  Ferries have been used on this route since at least the 12th century, and continue to be popular for both local people and visitors. It appears that Gary Evans, Merseytravel’s head of customer delivery, doesn't understand the iconic status that Mersey Ferries has, as demonstrated in his recent comment: "It’s like a car – if you are spending a lot of money keeping it on the road at some point you have to look at it and decide whether to keep it or buy a new one." He goes on to say: "No decisions have been made – this report is not a decision being made – but our approach is we can’t sustain two terminals on the Wirral if we are to meet our objective of being costs neutral to the public purse." We sign up to save Woodside Ferry and call upon the Action Group to develop a 10 year strategy for Woodside Ferry, the river trade and Birkenhead Hamilton square and waterfront.
