Vote Against 2015SB76
The Issue
Are your children's class sizes too large? Do you see any viable reason to increase the class size? 2015 SB 76 AN ACT TO ALLOW A PUBLIC SCHOOL TO EXCEED THE MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE AS ADOPTED BY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES
A subsection of this bill allows this increase in class size for no more than 1 semester if the class:
(1) Began the semester at or below the maximum class size allowed; and (2) Does not exceed the maximum class size allowed by more than ten percent (10%).
Most classes are already filled to capacity and teachers have to manage their time between kids with different abilities, pullouts, and behavior problems. All of these things decrease the ability of small group education and make 1 on 1 instruction near impossible. Adding kids to the classroom, only makes instruction more difficult, behavior problems increase, and a wider range between kids below grade level ability to above grade ability.
No teacher in the State of Arkansas would increase their class size, no matter the timeframe, as they know it would diminish their ability to help each child reach their full educational potential. Arkansas already ranks in the bottom 10 states nationally in education. Increasing class size will not improve this statistic.
