As we feared would happen, the prosecutor in Patrick Kane’s case has declined to press charges against the hockey star following accusations that he raped a woman in his Erie County, NY home in August. Although formal charges will never be filed against him, the NHL still should have suspended him at the time in recognition of the seriousness of the allegation.
The NHL’s failure to give any weight to the Kane investigation sends the message that when a player is accused of rape, the woman in question is likely lying. But studies tell us that only 2 to 8 percent of reported sexual assaults are false – in at least 92 percent of reported cases, there was a crime committed.
Sexual assault and domestic violence are serious crimes, but because their victims are most often women the NHL apparently feels free to ignore them.
No more. I’m taking this moment to amp up the pressure on the NHL. Join me, and tell the NHL it’s time to implement a zero tolerance policy for violence against women. Click here to tweet at them: http://bit.ly/1RZvoYu
Sincerely,
Melissa
