Or better still directly in the Drumcree community centre.
It's been nearly three decades since the Garvaghy Road community in the north of Ireland fought courageously for peace and dignity. In the late 1990s, a ripple of unrest shook this small but resilient community as they faced march after march from the Orange Order. The decision to re-route those marches by the Parades Commission was a significant step towards healing for the people who have suffered so profoundly from those turbulent times. Today, the scars remain, but they are overshadowed by the resilience and determination of the local residents to live in harmony.
Now, 28 years later, the same Orange Order wants to resurrect these tensions by marching through Garvaghy Road once more, despite the existence of a viable alternative route. Such an action unequivocally disregards the wishes and well-being of the local community who simply desire to live in peace and harmony. It risks reopening old wounds that the community has worked so hard to heal, threatening to undo the hard-earned peace these residents deserve and have fought for.
The alternative route offers a simple, yet effective solution that respects everyone involved. It acknowledges the right of expression for the Orange Order while also honouring the deep, unmet need for lasting peace on Garvaghy Road. The streets have witnessed enough conflict; it is time they are allowed to flourish in peace without the shadow of past disputes looming large.
We stand in solidarity with the Garvaghy Road residents. This petition & it's hope is not only a matter of practicality but a moral imperative. It is an appeal to the humanity of those in power and to those participating in these events to respect a community that wishes to move forward without the burden of past conflicts.
Please, sign this petition to show your solidarity with the people of the Garvaghy Road.
