Garden City Residents Fighting Back Against JFK Airplane Noise

Garden City Residents Fighting Back Against JFK Airplane Noise
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Garden City urgently call on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, our state and county elected officials, and airline operators to take immediate, concrete action to mitigate excessive airplane noise from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) that affects our communities. For years, noise pollution and vibrations from low-flying aircraft traveling to and from JFK have grown worse, causing persistent disruption to our daily lives. Residents—many living miles from the airport—report frequent, loud overflights at all hours of the day and night. This relentless noise pollution negatively impacts sleep, learning, mental and physical health, and our collective quality of life. Despite repeated complaints, advocacy efforts, and even legal action, the problem remains unaddressed. Recent changes to airspace management, flight paths, and runway usage have resulted in a dramatic increase in air traffic over residential neighborhoods, often at lower altitudes and increased frequency. In July of this year alone 13,000 flights on runway 22L flew directly above our homes. The adverse impacts on our health, property values, and community environment can no longer be ignored. We respectively request that aviation authorities and elected officials:
- Conduct an updated and comprehensive noise and air quality study for Nassau County, lowering the Day-Night Average Sound Level (DNL) threshold that defines noise exposure zones.
- Enforce stricter noise abatement and curfew policies, limiting late-night and early-morning flights over residential areas.
- Redistribute flight arrivals and departures more equitably, making use of all available runways and dispersing traffic to prevent overburdening any single community.
- Increase any current investment and install more continuous noise monitoring systems with public access to data.
- Facilitate ongoing transparent dialogue with community representatives, and give proper consideration to recommendations from resident committees, the JFK Airport Committee, and local advocacy organizations.
We refuse to accept that our well-being should be sacrificed for airport and airline convenience. Nassau County deserves peace, health, and a reasonable quality of life for all residents.
