Route 66 (and other parts of New Mexico) are losing pieces of history. Historic Neon signs are being bought at an alarming rate and taken down and away from their cities. This has got to stop! Some people are claiming them as “saviors of these signs that were headed for the scrap yard”. That is FALSE! The majority of the signs they have bought and removed were in no way causing any danger. One exception was the Sahara Lounge sign in Santa Rosa. There is proof however, that a local tried to buy the sign and was in contact with the owner after it suffered damage from a windstorm. A “reporter” was told that the sign was going to be scrapped. 100% UNTRUE!

How many more of these sign will we lose? They are hurting these small towns that depend on tourist stopping and visiting. A big attraction to most of these places are the vintage neon signs standing tall! So many people are upset with this action by the Garcia’s, and it’s time we show them that we will not and can not support what they are doing. As a Route 66 community, let’s voice our opinions and come together to be heard loud and clear... STOP REMOVING HISTORIC NEON SIGNS FROM NEW MEXICO! Will it be a matter of time before they start taking signs from California, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois?

If they really cared about Route 66, neon signs and the communities they are currently hurting, a suggestion would be to give them back to the towns in which they belong - to be displayed for all to see. Include their company info at the locations and see all the GOOD publicity they'd get vs. having all the signs cooped up in one location in one town - not on Route 66.

I, along with many others on Route 66 would sincerely appreciate your help!
