Party for Animal Welfare respectfully petition Galway City Council to name the city's new pedestrian bridge "Humanity Dick Martin bridge".
 
Richard Martin was the M.P. for Galway for much of the early 19th century. He supported Catholic Emancipation and favoured Irish Independence. He was one of the most famous people of his generation and a personal friend of King George the Third. The King affectionately nicknamed him "Humanity Dick" in recognition of his lifelong passion for Animal Rights.
 
In 1822 Martin succeeded in passing into law his "Ill Treatment of Cattle Act", also known as "Martin's Law", - the world's first piece of Animal Rights legislation. Not content with this he became one of the founding members of the R.S.P.C.A.
 
2O22 marks the 200th anniversary of the passing of Martin's Law in the Westminster parliament - a year that is also likely to see the completion of Galway's new footbridge. What better way to remember the great man's achievements than by naming the bridge in his honour.
