Against the idea of a trial cycleway in Salthill, Galway

The Issue

A bit of a long read so I do apologies in advance..

Yesterday (14.12.21) it was made public that a trial cycle lane would be introduced in Salthill Galway from March and will remain for the summer months. The route is to extend from Grattan Road out to Barna Road.  A one way system will be implemented in certain areas of Salthill and hundreds of parking spaces will  be lost, especially disabled parking spaces, 6 to be exact. I implore the public to see the gravity of this proposed cycle lane. Beaches will be inaccessible for the disabled or less mobile unless they are to attend the beach next to the main car park in Salthill opposite the new cinema.

Below I have posted a link where Galway City Council have invested in beach runs for people with disabilities to be used on Ladies Beach. I ask you how are people who require these to access them given the length from the car park to ladies beach.

The below statement I have copied from the Galway County Council website. An objective of the Galway County Council was to  integrate services to ensure people with disabilities can access the same amenities as all people, but yet take this right away from them with this cycle route.

"The Disability Act (2005) requires public bodies to ensure, over time, that buildings and services are accessible to people with disabilities. It places an obligation on local authorities to integrate disability service provision with mainstream services, where this is practical and appropriate.  An objective of the County Galway Local Authorities Disability Action Plan 2007 – 2015 is to integrate service provision to ensure people with disabilities can access the same level of service as all customers."

It is not just people that are less mobile and disabled that will be put out, but also the public attending the beach and people who use that road as a route home everyday. This absurd idea is going to cause traffic chaos.

I ask that if you do not agreed with this that you please sign the submission but also that when the chance become available to the public to make there opinion know that you also comment on that on the Galway City Councils website. We the people can stop this if we stand together. Please share as it is not just people in Galway who will be put out by this but nay visitor and tourist attending in the summer months, not to mention what it means for the local businesses.

Please sign the petition, the more signatures the better. I will be submitting them along with an official letter when the time comes available to make our response heard
