Change the name of Wallace Hall at GSCC

Gadsden State Community College has a theatre building named after Former Alabama Governor George Wallace.

However, it has now become common knowledge that Wallace was a strong segregationist, and he held ideologies that should not be portrayed on campus. In an effort to enact real change for racial injustice, this petition will serve to increase awareness and stop the honorarium of racist individuals.

In place of the name George Wallace, the building would potentially be named after James A. Hood, a Gadsden native whom Wallace attempted to block from enrolling at the then all-white University of Alabama in 1963, an incident which became known as the "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door".

In a statement from GSCC: "Gadsden State Community College is committed to the real work of providing an opportunity for its students to learn in a rich environment free of intolerance and bigotry, one that teaches and honors the importance of multiculturalism and the acceptance of differences in others."

Please help us strive to create an environment in which diversity and a sense of community are encouraged and supported on our campus!
