Dear Mayor Newton and Rockville City Council Members:

We are asking the City of Rockville to install a crosswalk at the intersection of Maryland Ave. and Monument St., to allow pedestrians to safely cross Maryland Avenue. 

Many of us regularly cross Maryland Ave. at this location to reach New Mark Commons, Monument Park, the RideOn bus stop, or other neighborhoods. Traffic is very heavy, and during rush hour, it can take 3 minutes or longer to wait for a break in traffic in order to cross the street.  It can be a dangerous place to cross without a crosswalk, particularly for children, who frequently cross Maryland Ave. to reach Monument Park.

The nearest alternative crossing locations are not practical.  They are located a quarter mile away, at the intersections of Great Falls Road (to the west) and New Mark Esplanade (to the east).

In addition to improving public safety, the proposed crosswalk would improve access between New Mark Commons and Monument Park and other nearby neighborhoods.  The crossing would be located by the pedestrian path that connects Harlow Ct. with Maryland Ave. (see map:  https://drive.google.com/open?id=1HpA8EUKuFvrWr3dwx2UsXwAIPvI&usp=sharing) which is used by many local residents entering and exiting New Mark Commons.
