Petition updateGAA: Stop club fundraisers at greyhound tracksFresh calls on GAA to stop clubs fundraising at greyhound tracks

There are renewed calls on the GAA to act to stop local clubs from fundraising at greyhound tracks where dogs suffer and die.

After ignoring appeals for an end to greyhound track fundraising last year, St Mary's Hurling and Camogie Club in Clonmel has announced another fundraiser at Clonmel track next month. The announcement about the "great night out" comes just weeks after a shocking RTE Investigates documentary exposed the horrors of greyhound racing - including the killing of 6,000 greyhounds every year because they're not fast enough to win races - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM

ICABS has told the GAA and the club about the suffering and deaths of greyhounds at Clonmel stadium - 67 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 21 were killed by a track vet over the past four years alone, sickening Irish Greyhound Board statistics show. Among the victims was a 1-year-old greyhound who suffered a heart attack and died during a 4th May 2018 race. The greyhound, named Darty Talk, collapsed at the finishing line and fell head-first to the ground https://youtu.be/EAX_ZeVgvIA?t=35s

Fundraisers at greyhound tracks are helping to keep the cruel greyhound industry afloat - the track takes a 30-40 per cent commission from ticket sales and also profits from gambling and food/drink sales on the night. We are continuing to appeal to individual GAA clubs to show compassion for the dogs and reject an industry in which greyhounds are injured, doped, mutilated, dumped and killed.

ACTION ALERT

Join us in urging St Mary's Hurling and Camogie Club Clonmel to show compassion for the dogs and choose an alternative fundraising venue.

Don't attend or sponsor fundraisers at greyhound tracks. If you wish to support a club, make a direct donation and appeal to the fundraising committee to reject greyhound racing.

Urge the GAA to tell member clubs to reject greyhound racing as a form of fundraising.

The cruel and crumbling greyhound industry has received nearly a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers' money since 2001 (including €16.8 million for 2019). Urge Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe to end funding to the greyhound industry and instead direct the money to sports clubs, charities, animal rescue centres, health groups and other deserving causes. Email "Stop funding the cruel greyhound industry" to taoiseach@taoiseach.gov.ie, leo.varadkar@oireachtas.ie, paschal.donohoe@oireachtas.ie, minister@per.gov.ie
