When this great era for Gaelic football is recalled in years to come, Dublin and Mayo will surely be remembered as two of the game’s greatest forces for change. You can talk about resources and the natural advantages afforded by having huge populations, but what Dublin and Mayo – along with Donegal and Kerry, of course - have mostly done is to change the culture of the game forever.
Under Pat Gilroy and now Jim Gavin, Dublin have raised the bar, establishing a culture of excellence and continual improvement. Mayo were one of the first to meet the challenge, changing the face of sport in the county under the demanding James Horan before Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly took up the mantle. On Sunday, two behemoths collide. Mayo, lest we forget, have not reached their Promised Land in this period, but they have done just as much to change the landscape and deserve to be taken very seriously by Dublin.
With Kerry awaiting the winners in the final on September 20, this should be the first of two era-defining games, when the ruling elite meet in heavyweight contests to decide the destination of the Sam Maguire Cup. Much has been made of Dublin’s supposed easy passage to the semi-final and the fact that they have not played a Division I side in their cruise through Leinster and subsequent eight-point win over Fermanagh in the quarter-final.
Will this really be a deciding factor in the outcome of the game? Given the culture of excellence Jim Gavin has nurtured and the size and strength of the squad he has assembled, it is very unlikely. Just as Kilkenny have often made it through to All-Ireland hurling finals without a glove being laid on them and still managed to produce the goods on the big day, Gavin will be banking on the many inter-squad games his players will have fiercely contested to give them the sharp edge required to tame Mayo.
