I Sverige pågår en orimlig jakt på varg. 
Det har tagit över femtio år för vargstammen att bli ca 400 vargar. Licensjakt på varg påbörjades 2010. Trots det beslutade riksdagen förra året att halvera vargstammen (170-270 st).

Räkning av antalet vargar är en invecklad och svårförståelig process. Vargräkningen påbörjas 1 oktober varje år och avslutas 31 mars. Under den tiden som vargarna räknas dör många av jakt, inte minst licensjakt, blir överkörda och annat. Vintern är dessutom en svår tid för vargarna. Illegal jakt på varg  beräknas uppgå till ca 20 % varje år (SLU). Hur många vargar vi egentligen har vet vi aldrig. 

Att minska den redan lilla vargstammen är därför mycket riskabelt. Dessutom måste man ifrågasätta varför våra svenska, stora rovdjur bara ska få finnas i minsta möjliga antal, så kallad gynnsam bevarandestatus. Denna siffra har med mer kunskap ändrats med tiden och är idag minst 300 vargar. Ett tilläggskrav då var att vi var femte år skulle få in nytt blod från öster (Finland/Ryssland). Det har inte hänt och då beräknas antalet varjar vi behöver till minst 1200. Andra forskargrupper nämner siffran 1800 eller fler.

Media skrämmer dagligen upp allmänheten med skräckbilder av varg. Det är givetvis hemskt för djurägare att hitta sina djur döda men det är förhållandevis få boskap som dödas. Att varg rör sig i bostadsområden beror på att det oftast är unga vargar som inte vet att människor bor där eller att de söker föda. Det har förekommit att åtlar lagts ut för att locka fram vargarna. 

Vargjakt är inget annat än troféjakt. Trots att ingen äger vargarna tillåts jägaren/markägare att behålla troféer som skinn och kranie av varg. 

Vi behöver våra vargar som fyller en viktig funktion i ekosystemet. Vi har förbundit oss till olika lagar att hålla de få fridlysta, rödlistade vargar vi har.

In Sweden, an unreasonable hunt for wolves is underway.
It has taken over fifty years for the wolf tribe to become about 400 wolves. License hunting for wolves began in 2010. Despite that, the swedish parliament, Riksdagen, decided last year to halve the wolf population (170-270).

Counting the number of wolves is a complicated process and difficult to understand. The counting of wolves begins on 1 October each year and ends on 31 March. During the time that the wolves are counted, many die from hunting, not least licensed hunting, are run over and other things. Winter is also a difficult time for wolves. Illegal hunting of wolves is estimated to amount to about 20% each year (SLU). We never know how many wolves we actually have.

Reducing the already small wolf population is therefore very risky. In addition, one must question why our Swedish large predators should only be allowed to exist in the smallest possible number, so called favorable conservation status. With more knowledge, this number has changed over time and is today at least 300 wolves. An additional requirement then was that every five years we would bring in new blood from the east (Finland/Russia). That has not happened and then the number of wolves we need is calculated to be at least 1200. Other research groups mention the number 1800 or more.

The media scares the public daily with scary images of wolves. It is of course horrible for animal owners to find their animals dead, but relatively few livestock are killed. The fact that wolves move in residential areas is because they are usually young wolves who do not know that people live there or that they are looking for food. It has happened that carrions have been put out to attract the wolves.

Wolf hunting is nothing more than trophy hunting. Although no one owns the wolves, the hunter/landowner is allowed to keep trophies such as wolf skins and skulls.

We need our wolves, which fulfill an important function in the ecosystem. We have committed to various laws to keep the few protected, red-listed wolves we have. Stop the potential extinction now.
