Stop the Speedway on Fyfe Road: Protect Our Families, Not Just Our Pedestrians
It should not take a serious injury or death before action is taken on Fyfe Road.

We, the residents and road users of Kellyville Ridge, are calling on Blacktown City Council to urgently address dangerous and excessive speeding along Fyfe Road, particularly between Carindale Street and Silverwood Street and around the T-way intersections.

For residents, the danger is no longer hypothetical. Dangerous driving is occurring directly outside our homes, and a recent crash demonstrates how quickly speeding and loss of vehicle control can put residents and their properties at risk.

The Most Recent Crash – BMW X1
As shown in the photograph accompanying this petition, the most recent serious incident involved a BMW X1 displaying red P-plates, which lost control and crashed into a residential property near the corner of Bisen Street.

Immediately before the crash, I was parked outside my home, while another neighbour had also parked outside her property. I witnessed the neighbour exit her vehicle and reach back inside while standing beside her open car door.

Within seconds, the BMW X1 travelled past my parked vehicle at what appeared to me to be a very high speed. The force and air movement as it passed were noticeable enough that I observed my own vehicle move or shake.

The BMW then swerved to avoid the neighbour and her open car door. After this sudden manoeuvre, the driver appeared unable to regain control of the SUV. The vehicle continued towards the corner property and ultimately crashed into the neighbour's home.

Based on what I witnessed, the kerb appears to have played a major role in changing the BMW's direction as it lost control, swinging the vehicle away from a nearby tree before it struck the property.

This incident could very easily have had a far worse outcome. A resident was standing beside her vehicle only moments before the BMW passed. There were parked vehicles, a tree and occupied residential properties immediately surrounding the crash. A slight difference in timing or trajectory could have resulted in a person being struck.

This is exactly why residents should not have to wait for a fatality before preventative infrastructure is installed.

This Is Not an Isolated Concern
A Silent Threat: A pedestrian was nearly struck by a speeding Tesla. Due to the vehicle's quiet operation, there was little audible warning of the approaching vehicle. The pedestrian began crossing believing it was safe and was confronted with a vehicle approaching at speed.

Cyclists at Risk: Two cyclists carefully navigating an intersection were nearly struck by a speeding red P-plate Lexus SUV. Cyclists, pedestrians and residents should not have to anticipate vehicles approaching residential intersections at excessive speeds.

Dangerous and Disruptive Driving: Residents have witnessed P-plate and other drivers travelling at excessive speeds along Fyfe Road, creating unnecessary noise and placing other road users at risk. The consequences of speeding vehicles have also extended to beloved family pets, which have little chance of avoiding a fast-moving vehicle.

This is the reality residents are experiencing on Fyfe Road.

Fyfe Road is not a racetrack. It is a residential street.

Families live here. Children walk through the area. Elderly residents cross the road. Cyclists use these intersections. Residents reverse from driveways, open their car doors and walk between parked vehicles every day.

A residential road should be designed so that a momentary mistake does not have the potential to end in someone being seriously injured or killed.

We Are Asking Blacktown City Council to Act
We call on Blacktown City Council to investigate and implement appropriate traffic-calming measures on Fyfe Road, with particular attention given to the stretch between Carindale Street and Silverwood Street and the intersections surrounding the T-way.

These measures should include consideration of:

Speed humps or raised speed platforms at appropriate locations;
Traffic islands, slow points or other physical traffic-calming infrastructure;
A formal traffic and speed assessment of Fyfe Road;
Improved signage and road markings where appropriate; and
Any additional engineering measures recommended by Council's road-safety specialists to physically discourage excessive speeds.
Signs and speed limits alone cannot protect residents when some motorists choose to ignore them. The design of the road itself needs to encourage and, where appropriate, physically require motorists to slow down.

The recent BMW X1 crash should be treated as a warning, not simply another incident to be recorded and forgotten.

We should not have to wait until the next vehicle hits a pedestrian, cyclist, neighbour or child before meaningful action is taken.

We cannot wait for a tragedy to force change. The time to act is now.
