The Issue

We the undersigned request that the full funding of AB1460 be granted to the College of Ethnic Studies - American Indian & Indigenous,  Asian/Asian American, Chicana(o) & Latina(o), and Pan African Studies  - at Cal State LA, as required by law. The signatories below represent the many stakeholders of only one of two College of Ethnic Studies in the United States. Currently, the administration is making the College ʻjustifyʻ the full release of these funds, despite majority California voter support to fund the Ethnic Studies curriculum.

As a discipline born out of the multiracial, multigenerational alliances between student and community activists of the 1960s, Ethnic Studies at Cal State LA was created by faculty, students, and community leaders interests to ensure that Cal State LA live up to its promise of an education rooted in social justice . Assembly Bill 1460 mandates that Ethnic Studies receives taxpayer dollars to do the work that the University has publicly lauded since its inception without providing equitable resources to the College.

This petition demands the University honor the legal premise of this bill. It is not to balance the budget of Cal State LA nor to be used in any capacity other than supporting the teaching of Ethnic Studies as dictated by the voters of the state of California. We hold the administration of Cal State LA accountable for adhering to the legislative intentions of AB1460.
