The Issue

We call on HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and relevant federal agencies to support a funded pilot program to develop safe, affordable housing communities for people with mold illness, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), and other environmental illnesses.

For some people, conventional housing can be difficult or impossible to tolerate because of moisture and mold problems or exposures to fragrances and other chemicals. People affected may face housing insecurity, financial hardship, and few realistic alternatives.

A practical housing model should combine two principles:

• Individual choice inside each home. Residents should be able to select building materials and finishes that suit their individual sensitivities. Different homes do not all need to use the same materials; a range of low-emission options can help accommodate different needs.

• Shared, enforceable protections across the community. Rules should prevent avoidable exposures that travel beyond a person’s home and affect neighbors, including fragrances from laundry and personal-care products, air fresheners, and designated pesticides or herbicides.

Communities should use mold-resistant construction practices, moisture control, and carefully selected low-emission materials. They should offer a range of housing choices—including permanent homes, rentals, tiny houses on wheels, and designated RV or trailer spaces where permitted—and encourage municipalities to adopt appropriate zoning policies.

We ask HHS to work with relevant federal agencies, affected residents, disability advocates, researchers, and building-science experts to develop and fund a pilot program, with a plan to evaluate its safety, affordability, and feasibility.

Please sign and share this petition to support practical housing solutions for people who cannot safely tolerate many conventional housing environments. No one needs to disclose a diagnosis or other medical information to support this request.
