Fund all Lifeline services Australia-wide permanently
The issue
In the midst of an alarming crisis, where suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in Australia, I find myself reflecting on our priorities. Recently, the South Australian government decided to invest $40 million in upgrading the North Adelaide golf course. This decision made me question our commitments as a society and where we are choosing to invest our resources.
Lifeline is a crucial service that saves countless lives by providing essential crisis support and suicide prevention services across Australia. Despite the undeniable importance of such services, Lifeline often struggles with insufficient funding, limiting its ability to meet the growing demand for mental health support. Every life matters, and every call unanswered is a potential tragedy.
In 2022, Lifeline received over one million calls. Each call is a plea for help, highlighting the urgent need for fully funded services that can provide adequate support to everyone, regardless of location. Mental health doesn't adhere to government budgets or economic constraints – it demands action, attention, and unwavering support.
The need for mental health support has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges within our communities. It's critical that we provide nationwide access to Lifeline services, without the fear of reduction in services due to lack of funds.
Therefore, I urge both federal and state governments to prioritize humanity over unnecessary luxuries. By reallocating funds and viewing mental health as a public health priority, we can ensure that services like Lifeline reach all Australians in need. Let's work together to secure full funding for all Lifeline services throughout Australia and ensure that no call for help goes unheard.
Sign this petition to call on the Australian federal and state governments to fully fund Lifeline services across the country and put the welfare of our people first. Together, we can make a difference.
