The Issue

In loving memory of my beloved dog, Disco, who I lost during a medical emergency, I am urging action to establish a publicly funded national animal emergency hotline. Disco's unfortunate passing made me realize how desperately we need better emergency resources for animals. The heartbreaking experience of losing a pet because timely and accessible help was unavailable is something that no pet owner should ever endure.

In the United States, there are over 144 million cats and dogs living in homes, and that number does not include other beloved animals such as birds, reptiles, and small mammals. Despite the enormous number of animal companions, there is a glaring lack of resources for pet owners in critical situations. When urgent care is needed, having a national 24/7 animal emergency hotline would be invaluable in guiding pet owners through crises and potentially saving lives.

Imagine being at home, then unexpectedly, suddenly your beloved pet is in medical distress and you have no immediate way to contact or reach veterinary help (“who do I call what do I do, where do I go?”). Every passing second is crucial to the survival of your animal in crisis. The sense of helplessness and loss could be alleviated by providing a dedicated hotline that connects pet owners to mobile veterinarians, available emergency clinics, and a network of resources ready to act at a moment's notice.

A federally funded hotline can ensure equitable access to vital resources regardless of geographical location. It would bridge the gap in lacking communities and enable swift response in emergencies. This service would educate pet owners on how to handle critical situations until professional help arrives and improve coordination with emergency services, potentially preventing the trauma of losing a beloved pet.

We need this change not only to honor Disco but to protect countless other animals and their families from devastating losses. I urge everyone who has ever experienced the unconditional love of a pet or has borne the pain of their absence, to join me in advocating for this cause. Let us ensure no pet suffers due to a lack of immediate care.

Please sign this petition to advocate for a national animal emergency hotline, funded publicly to provide swift, effective, and equitable assistance for all animals in times of urgent need. Together, we can create a safety net that honors the bond we share with our animal companions and prevents needless heartbreak.
