The Issue

"I wish someone had thought of me too,
I would have made arrangements for my safety in schools,
I would have provided information related to my health,
At least clean toilets and water facilities would have been provided,
So, presently I might be giving my 10th board exam,
She would have been laying the foundation for a beautiful future for herself!”

Supriya (name changed), attended primary school in her village till 2016 and had to move out of her village for secondary school. For the first two years, she was able to read while struggling with her life and problems, but when she started menstruating, she faced innumerable difficulties. Neither any guidance, nor any information or support that he had already received, he could not get any of it from school, but he did get some information and jugaad from friends from home. When there were no water facilities in the school toilets, she used to stay at home during her menstruation and when she started staying at home, she had to do household chores. Supriya, who was busy with household chores, started missing her studies, and soon her parents put a complete stop to her studies!”

This is the story of only one girl who lives in a small village in Mahidpur block, and her parents are now searching for a boy for her so that she can get married in a few years and her future will be safe!

In Mahidpur, a block of Ujjain district, the percentage of girls dropping out of government school in the village was 17% in 2019, which has increased to near 60% after the COVID-19 outage. There are 4 main reasons behind girls dropping out of school. First, the lack of toilets with water facilities in the school, lack of information and resources about menstruation, child marriage and lastly, the concern of the girl child in the mind of the parents.

During a survey in 7 villages of Mahidpur Tehsil, we found that only 2 schools met the RTE 2009 norms. All other schools either do not have toilets with water facilities or were without doors or were not cleaned. Because of this school girls are not able to use them either on normal days or during periods! We are currently working through a community education center with children of class 3 to 5 of a government school for quality improvement in education through village girls.

The goal of our campaign is that the BEO of Mahidpur tehsil should work in these villages to make toilets in rural schools as per the norms of the infrastructural provisions of RTE and ensure that in the next three months all these school toilets have a water facility. And these must be safe for the girl child.

If this campaign is fulfilled and toilets are made functional, then more than 300 girls of 7 villages will be able to continue their studies and change the face of their families as well, and their future course.

Support us by signing this petition that as soon as possible we can get the girls of the village out of this problem!
