As a senior at Canyon High School in New Braunfels, TX, I've always appreciated the second chance breakfast program. It's a vital necessity for many students, including myself, who simply don't have time to eat before school starts. Having that opportunity later in the morning allowed me to focus and perform better in classes. Sadly, the decision to lower accessibility to this option threatens not only academic performance but also the well-being of students who rely on school meals as their primary source of food. Many of my peers face the same struggle. Some students at Canyon High School have limited access to meals at home and the school breakfast program is crucial for their health and well-being. By eliminating critical time students need to get chance breakfast, we’re stripping away a fundamental need from students. Moreover, flexibly allowing students to eat in class was a progressive step forward, acknowledging the personal challenges some students face. It's not always possible for everyone to arrive at school early or have breaks when meals can be consumed. Allowing breakfast during class addresses these issues, ensuring that students can meet their academic goals without being hindered by physical hunger. In addition to reinstating the breakfast program, I'd like to address our current policy on tardies. Under the current system, students can face up to three days of In-School Suspension (ISS) for tardiness, which seems unnecessarily punitive. A more reasonable approach, like requiring detention, would suffice in encouraging punctuality without causing students to miss valuable class time. Furthermore, longer passing periods between classes should be considered. Not every student is fortunate to have classes close together. In fact, navigating a crowded school in short intervals is often impossible, leading to unnecessary additional tardies. Extending passing times would provide all students a fair chance to reach their next class on time. *By signing this petition, you are supporting changes that cater to the well-being of all students at Canyon High School.
