The Issue

Two dogs in Tulsa were caught on camera being kicked in the face and dragged by their leashes. Now the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office needs to make sure the man accused of hurting them faces full charges, and that he never gets these dogs, or any others, back.

According to police, staff at the Eagle Suites apartments near East 31st Street and Memorial Drive spotted a loose dog on the property and checked their security footage to find its owner. What they found was disturbing. Police say the video shows a 38-year-old man kicking both of his dogs in the face and pulling them by their leashes. While he struck one dog with its leash and hauled it up a staircase, the other dog got away. Officers said the dogs could be heard crying out and never appeared to act aggressively toward him.

Police took the man into custody. While searching his apartment, officers say they found a handgun he is barred from having because of a past felony conviction. He was booked into the Tulsa County Jail on two counts of animal cruelty after a former felony conviction and one count of illegal gun possession. Both dogs are now with Tulsa Animal Services.

But formal charges have not been filed yet. Until they are, nothing guarantees this case moves forward.

The Tulsa County District Attorney should file all three charges and pursue the strongest penalties the law allows. Any sentence should include a ban on owning or living with animals, and both dogs should be placed in safe, loving homes instead of ever going back to him.

These dogs could not speak for themselves. The video did. Sign the petition to demand justice for these two dogs before this case slips through the cracks.
