Something no animal lover wants to picture has come to light in Southern California. Investigators searching several properties tied to Furget Me Not Cat Rescue, a nonprofit based in Pomona, say they found more than 500 cats, some alive and some dead, along with nine dogs. Authorities say several of the dead cats had been kept in a garage freezer, and others had been buried in a yard.

I'm asking the Los Angeles County District Attorney and the San Bernardino County District Attorney to see this investigation all the way through, and to file animal cruelty charges if the evidence supports them.

Furget Me Not presented itself as a rescue, a place where animals were supposed to be safe. Instead, according to the Upland Police Department, several animals were underfed, and some had injuries that were never treated or were cared for the wrong way. Investigators also took expired human medications and used needles from the properties.

So far, officials haven't said how many of the cats survived, and they haven't announced any arrests or charges. That's exactly why public attention matters. Cases like this can quietly fade once the headlines move on, and the animals who suffered are left without answers.

Every animal harmed here deserves a real investigation. The surviving cats and dogs deserve the chance to heal and find loving homes. And anyone thinking about trusting a rescue deserves to know that cruelty won't be ignored.
