Fulfill promises to Afghan SIV applicants urgently
The Issue
I am an Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) applicant, once employed alongside U.S. forces, now stranded in a third country, waiting desperately for the United States to uphold its promise. This is not just my story; it echoes the voices of many friends and colleagues who find themselves in similar perilous situations. While we wait for visa issuance, our lives remain fraught with danger.
The SIV program represents a solemn commitment made by the United States to those of us who placed our trust and, quite literally, our lives in its hands. We stood by American forces, providing critical support and intelligence that were instrumental in their operations. Yet now, as the situation in Afghanistan has escalated, the delay in processing our visas has left us in limbo.
Currently, thousands of SIV applicants are caught in a cycle of uncertainty in countries like Pakistan, Tajikistan, Albania, and Qatar. These individuals and their families face constant threats, unable to safely return to Afghanistan and without the stability that the U.S. once promised.
According to a report by the International Refugee Assistance Project, there are about 18,000 SIV applications still pending, affecting approximately 53,000 family members. This backlog has severe implications not only on our livelihoods but also on the moral obligations of the United States.
We urge the Biden Administration and Congress to accelerate and streamline the entire SIV process, allocating more resources to ensure timely visa issuance. This includes reinstating interviews at embassies, deploying additional personnel to handle the backlog, and providing temporary relocation assistance prior to full resettlement. Concrete, immediate action is needed to prevent potential loss of life.
By signing this petition, you are not only supporting us in our time of need but also holding the United States government accountable to its promises. Help us remind the leaders in Washington of their duty to protect those who have sacrificed for them. Your signature can be the catalyst for change that finally brings safety and peace to those of us caught in this excruciating wait. Sign this petition to demand justice and fulfilment of promises to Afghan SIV applicants.
