Fulfill Long-Standing Preservation Priority Tasks in Fredericksburg

The Issue

For decades, City Council Vision Statements and Comprehensive Plans have expressed a desire to preserve Fredericksburg's history.  In recent years, many of the City’s stated goals “to be a proven leader in Historic Preservation” have been largely ignored.

Join with Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. to show your support for preserving our diverse cultural heritage and built environment.

Urge members of Council and the City Manager to follow through on longstanding Historic Preservation goals and priorities ASAP:

1) Establish a Preservation Advisory Committee to ensure persistent dialogue and support for City staff as outlined at the September 12, 2023, City Council Work Session and stated in the Comprehensive Plan. This committee was a top priority task for Council in 2021;

2) Commission a city-wide Historic Preservation Economic Impact Study to better quantify the ways in which preserving our historic character adds real value to our city, as recommended by hired consultants and requested by City staff for FY 2025. This, too, was a top priority for Council in 2021; and

3) Strengthen local economic incentives for those who choose to preserve the City’s existing older or blighted historic buildings by expanding the local “Rehabilitation Tax Credit.” This was recommended in the June 2023 expert study commissioned by the City and has been listed as a top priority task for Council since 2021.
