Melissa "Missy" Martz Should be Removed as an Employee of Frostburg State University
Why this petition matters
Melissa "Missy" Martz has been the subject of two recent revelations which disqualify her as a student advisor and instructor. As such, she should be removed from the staff of Frostburg State University.
The first revelation, that Martz had posted inflammatory remarks on her Facebook social media page in support of those who incited violence against Black Lives Matter protesters in Bedford, PA surfaced on August 26, 2020. The situation in Bedford was serious and involved two different shooting incidents and a peaceful protester was hospitalized. Martz took to her page and wrote, “Antifa and BLM threatened to burn the Bedford County, PA courthouse tonight. At first, I thought…. This post isn’t real. Must have been. Guess they shouldn’t mess with a bunch of country boys! Call went out for patriots/hunters to show up and it looks like they got it covered. Will you answer the call when it comes to your doorstep?” A second post reads, “…it’s safe everywhere if you ain’t scared to pull the trigger.” It is worth noting, plans of arson were rumored and no fires were reported in Bedford County.
As a result of these posts, she was removed as the advisor for The Bottom Line, FSU's independent student newspaper.
The second revelation came on September 1 when a student came forward to write a Letter to the Editor about the sexual harassment they faced as a member of the Social Media Team under Martz' leadership and advisory. In addition to being required to out themselves as transgender to Martz, the student reports that Martz forced the student to engage in deeply private, personal conversation about their gender identity from "2pm until it was dark outside" and that they left "feeling empty and violated." This student admits that they came forward publicly following the August 26 statement by The Bottom Line, but writes, "some people are just too far gone" and that they are "frankly tired of being afraid of the repercussions that come with being myself."
As a result of Melissa "Missy" Martz decision to condone and incite violence against peaceful protesters, her evident lack of concern for the social movements that impact her students, and because of notable transphobic behavior, she must be removed as a staff member of Frostburg State University effective immediately. She is a danger to her students and to the campus community.
