From Waste to Waves

The Issue

Our oceans, the lifeblood of Earth's climate, marine life, and human health, are under immense strain. As the 8th grade Entertainment Law class at Miami Arts Studio, we recognize the significance of clean oceans for clean air, food sources, and ecosystems. Now is the time to catalyze change. Alarmingly, Scientific Reports have revealed that by 2050, there'll be more plastic in the oceans than fish, if current trends continue (Scientific Reports, 2016). Marine pollution also accounts for 400 dead zones worldwide, covering an area larger than the United Kingdom (Source: UNESCO). The ramifications are not confined to merely marine life; more than 3 billion people across the globe depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods (Source: United Nations). This is a crisis - not just environmental, but social and economic as well.

Therefore, we propose this change begin at home in our local community. As a Project Citizen class, we identified one specific pollution problem, boater pollution. By signing this petition, you agree that the local government should instill a policy to increase funding for Waste Management to increase the amount of disposal areas, waste stations, and pickups.
