To the Federal and Provincial Governments of Canada,

We, the undersigned, are devastated and outraged by the wildfires that continue to ravage our country. The fire that destroyed half of Jasper left a deep scar on our community and our beloved natural environment — and the crisis has not stopped. Today, wildfires threaten communities across Northern Ontario, forcing First Nations and remote communities to evacuate while the province is forced to ask Ottawa for emergency help (The Globe and Mail). Season after season, the pattern repeats. It is clear that the current measures in place are grossly inadequate.

Other nations are not waiting. Greece — after suffering catastrophic fire seasons of its own (Space.com) — has integrated satellite-based fire detection into its national firefighting system, using thermal and AI-equipped nano-satellites that can pinpoint blazes only metres across and deliver near-real-time updates. If Greece can do this, Canada — with vastly more forest at stake — has no excuse for inaction.

We urgently call for the following measures to be implemented:

1. Satellite-Based Early Detection: Follow Greece's lead and deploy a dedicated network of thermal and AI-equipped satellites, supplemented by AI drones, for 24/7 monitoring and early detection of fire threats. These systems can detect fires while they are still small, providing real-time alerts that enable faster response and more effective prevention.
2. Automated Firefighting Systems: Invest in automated firefighting aircraft and other cutting-edge technologies that can quickly and efficiently combat wildfires, minimizing damage and preventing spread.
3. Increased Funding and Resources: Allocate substantial funding towards wildfire prevention and response. Provinces should not have to plead for federal help mid-crisis, as Ontario has been forced to do. Ensure local fire departments and emergency services have the resources, training, and equipment to tackle wildfires effectively.
4. Stricter Environmental Regulations: Implement and enforce stricter regulations to prevent activities that increase wildfire risk, including controlling deforestation, regulating land use, and ensuring responsible management of natural resources.
