From Accident to Action: A Sidewalk for Taxter Road

From Accident to Action: A Sidewalk for Taxter Road

The Issue

When I was in third grade, I was hit by a car on Taxter Road in Irvington, New York. That traumatic experience could have been prevented if a proper sidewalk had existed.

Taxter Road is heavily traveled, with blind curves, speeding vehicles, and no safe pedestrian walkway. Every day, children, families, runners, and residents are forced to walk dangerously close to traffic. This isn't just inconvenient, it is unsafe.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian crashes account for approximately 15% of all traffic-related deaths nationwide. Communities across the country are taking steps to protect pedestrians. Why hasn’t meaningful action been taken here?

The absence of a sidewalk puts our most vulnerable residents (especially children) at risk. Whether walking to school, visiting neighbors, or simply trying to exercise, no one should have to gamble with their safety.

If we install this sidewalk on Taxter Road, it will:

  • Significantly reduce pedestrian risk
  • Improve accessibility for residents
  • Increase overall community safety
  • Show that our town prioritizes prevention over reaction

This is not a luxury improvement. It is a necessary safety measure.

We call on local officials and transportation authorities to prioritize funding and construction of a sidewalk on Taxter Road. By signing this petition, you are asking our town leaders to act now before another preventable accident occurs.

Your signature sends a clear message: safety cannot wait.

Let’s turn a preventable accident into meaningful action.

Thanks so much for your time!

I support the sidewalk. I’m also copying the Town Board. Board agreed to issue an RFP for the sidewalk last night- it’s on the agenda today. I’m glad so many people are signing this petition. It’s an important safety initiative.
